We will leave Ottawa on Friday 12th Oct and return Monday 15th Oct (participants can opt for a shorter trip and return Sunday 14th if they prefer).
Spectacle Lake is located west of Barry’s Bay on Highway 60, about 2½ hours from Ottawa and just 30 minutes east of Algonquin Park. The lake is one of several in the Upper Madawaska River basin area including Bark Lake and Carson Lake. It is also the home of the Spectacle Lakes / Bear and Burnett’s Mountains (SLBM) trail system, a network of more than 50km of maintained trails that take in breathtaking views of the smaller lakes and rugged countryside in the area.
We will be staying in Spectacle Lake Lodge which offers rustic accommodation in lakeshore cabins with satellite TV, propane fireplace, refrigerator and coffee maker, as well as rooms in the main lodge. The primary lodge building has a lounge with fireplace and TV. Rambling club members will have use of a games/conference room with additional facilities: card tables and games (shuffleboard etc.) Sometimes we sing and dance!
The standard accommodation configuration is double occupancy. While single occupancy rooms are available, other room combinations can offer two or three bedrooms with shared bath facilities. Some cottages can accommodate up to 3 persons.
The cost of the trip includes breakfast and dinner at the Lodge restaurant each day (including dinner on Friday evening and breakfast on Monday morning). Breakfasts at Spectacle Lake Lodge are served buffet style and include their renowned, made to order, gourmet omelettes. The Lodge can provide bagged lunches if required (for an additional charge) or participants can bring their own lunch items.
Depending on the total number of participants we will organize one or more hikes to suit the interests and abilities of the group. The SLBM trail system is easily accessed from the Lodge and will likely be the basis for most outings. Hikes may also be organized on the trails in Algonquin Park.
Prices are as follows:
$140 per person per night for private accommodation (1 or 2 persons in a cabin or lodge room)
$130 per person per night for shared accommodation (3 or more persons in a cabin)
These prices do NOT include tax or gratuity.
This trip is open to members and non-members alike. Non-members pay a $10 premium per person which includes a 2018 ORC membership!
